Trip I:

Kupang > Labuan Bajo

We begin our journey toward the western tip of Indonesian Timor, heading west to briefly explore the island of Rote before continuing to Savu Island. Both islands are rich in biodiversity and home to many endemic species, making them fascinating to explore. On a previous trip, we even discovered fishes typically found only in Thai waters! As we travel west to Sumba, we will continue exploring this little-known but highly promising region. Finally, we’ll make our way to Komodo National Park, where we’ll likely wrap up the trip with a few dives at some of our favorite sites.

Trip II:

Labuan Bajo > Bima

Starting in Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo, we’ll head west to explore the east coast of Sumbawa. From there, we’ll continue to Sangeang, where we’ll spend the bulk of our diving. We visited a few years ago, and it remains one of our most requested destinations. The area is known for its exceptional muck diving, with an abundance of nudibranchs and fascinating critters. After Sangeang, we’ll head to Bima Bay—an absolute mecca for muck diving. The diversity of species and unique behaviors make it an unforgettable experience.

Trip III:

Bima > Labuan Bajo

For our final trip, we’ll spend time in Bima Bay and around Sangeang Island, hopefully exploring sites we haven’t had a chance to visit yet. After that, we plan to venture to the east coast and southeast corner of Sumbawa Island, where many promising bays await exploration. These areas can only be visited during the golden window around December. Of course, weather conditions can be unpredictable, so our plans will depend on that. But with such a rich and diverse region, we’ll never run out of places to explore!

* Of course exact route sometimes change to do weather, but this is our planned itinerary as it stands!

Trip I:

Sorong > Kaimana

This itinerary will begin around the biodivesrity hotspot of Raja Ampat, but swiftly head towards the FakFak peninsula to go in search of the new species that have been described from the reagion over the past few years. We know of some that will be high on our wishlist, for Richard one of his favourites is Jamal’s Dottyback (Manonichthys jamali). We will make our way past the incredible waterfalls at Momon and finish up in Triton Bay.

Trip II:

Kaimana > Saumlaki

Picking up in Triton Bay and the incredible sites and endemic fishes there, we will head out to explore the chain of islands that make up the ‘Forgotten Islands’. These really are some extraordinary sites to dive and we’re excited to be heading back. Of course, we’ll have a list of critters we’ll be hunting for. We end up in Saumlaki. Saumlaki is on the island of Yamdena, which is one of the Tanimbar Islands. Did you know that their isolation has led to many endemic island species evolving here? There’s a cockatoo (Goffin’s cockatoo), known only from these remote and rarely visited islands!!

Trip III:

Saumlaki > Kupang

Starting off in the Forgotten Islands, we’ll head westwards along a chain of islands that we intend to explore. Then reaching the Alor and Timor region the underwater conditions are impacted by the Indonesian flowthrough and nutrient rish water that it brings. So many Nusa Tenggara endemics will be on our wishlist for this section. What an adventure!

Halmahera is one of our favourite places to dive. There are numerous incredible endemic fishes, including the recently described Halmahera walking shark, coral blenny and the matahari dottyback. Most of the diving has been focused around the south and west of the island, but we have chosen this time of year to explore the east and north of Halmahera. We will start the trip in Sorong, before hopping over to Halmahera and exploring the coast there. It’s sure to be a wonderful trip and who knows what other treasures we might discover!

DIVE DAMAI’s newest vessel, MY DAMAI II was constructed in Tanjung Bira, South Sulawesi by Pak Hadji Baso in 2011. Pak Hadji Baso is one of the most respected master boat builders in the traditional Indonesian boat building community of Bira and was also the builder of DIVE DAMAI’s first vessel, MY DAMAI I.

MY DAMAI II has a deck length of 40 meters (131 ft) and a beam of 9 meters (29.5 ft) at its widest point. It has been built to an uncompromising standard and fitted with all the latest diving, navigation, and safety equipment to ensure the same level of service appreciated on our first vessel. And, where possible this service has been improved upon through additions such as satellite Wi-Fi capabilities.

The new vessel is slightly larger than the first ensuring three spacious outside deck areas with an outdoor dining facility, our famous massage and spa treatment area and plenty of extra lounging and sunbathing space. The crew to guest ratio remains the same as our first vessel (18 crew to 12 guests). Our hope is that all the new facilities will ensure an even more enjoyable cruise for both our returning and new guests.

Both Richard and Wendy have a long history with Indonesia, and it is certainly their second home. Damai offers a wonderful way for us to explore these enchanting isles. This itinerary also offers some of the island chain’s most spectacular diving. Many many endemic and newly discovered marine species will be on our radars. There are almost too many to mention. Trip I:

Starting on the highly diverse island of Halmahera, famed for its endemic walking shark (Hemiscyllium halmahera), we will head west to the Togian Islands where we will be hunting for the many endemic species including coral blennies and a flahserwrasse. Not least though, the Walea Soft Coral Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus waleananus) will be top of out list!

Trip II:

We start in Gorontalo, fabeled for its incredible Dali sponges before again spending some time in the Togian Islands, somewhere that we have been trying to get back to for many years. After that we sail eastwards towards Ambon and it’s incredible muck diving, hopping along the islands on the way.

Trip III:

Starting with muck in Ambon we will nead east, likely stopping at Nusa Laut, then over to Momon and the incredible ocean waterfall. Afterwards we will head to Tritron Bay, one of our favourite areas to explore. So many endemics and unusual fishes!

Indonesia has a huge diversity of marine environments, and hence dive sites.  During these two trips aboard the stunning Damai we will sail from Kupang in East Timor, Indonesia up the Pantar Strait, visiting some of our favourite dive sites at Beangabang, Pura Island and muck diving in the Kalabahi Strait. This area is full of many rare and endemic fishes, many of which have very rarely been recorded alive by scientists.  We will enjoy a diversity of dives, from oceanic reefs, to muck dives and fringing reefs.  Each area has its own community of animals and we will be searching for fishes endemic to each area we visit. Above waters, the scenery is out of this world. Volcanoes punctuate the horizon, making this a once in a life time trip to the edge of the world.

Trip I:

We will visit some rarely dived areas around Kupang, in Indonesia’s East Timor. This time of year offers a chance to visit some remote and hard-to-access sites, as well as positioning us to also visit some of our favourite sites in all of Indonesia.

Trip II:

Again, this time of year is perfect to access other sites that are usually prohibited by exposure to large seas. We have had many of these on our radars for several years and given some of the other discoveries we’ve made in this region, the opportunities are huge! N.B We don’t plan to dive in the Komodo area on this trip, instead taking the time to make the most of the islands east of Komodo which we are very excited to explore.
