After years of trying to get back to Papua New Guinea’s fascinating Milne Bay, we have finally been able to plan two  very special charters aboard Walindi Resort’s brand new MV Oceania.  Many unique organisms make this area their home, including the Milne Bay walking shark (Hemiscyllium michaeli), Vanderloos Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus vanderloosi), Coleman’s pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus colemani – probably this species, or maybe a new one…) and Lacy Scorpionfish (Rhinopias aphanes).  We are so excited to be able to offer these trips, after many years of searching for the ideal trip for our guests.

* Although this is a remote location, recent updates in the airline routings have made it much more accessible than it used to be. Whilst you can easily fly through Australia, Wendy and Rich will be flying direct from Singapore to Port Moresby and connecting through on the short direct hop to Alotau. What’s more, Air Niugini who do this international/domestic flight give 45kg allowance for economy tickets if you are a diver!

We will be exploring the Greater Milne Bay area during these back to back trips. Since this was the birth place of ‘MuckDiving’, we will of course be doing some of these kinds of dives, whilst also diving the reefs where walking sharks and lacy rhinopias scorpionfish dwell. So few people live around this part of the world, and so few divers are able to dive it that the reefs are as they would have  been  decades ago.  This was the area where I spent time really watching pygmy seahorses and my PhD research questions came to me.
MV Oceania is the brand new vessel, completed in 2019, from the owners of PNG’s iconic Walindi Resort and MV Febrina. She can accommodate 16 guests in twin/double en suite accommodation.  There are 3 queen-bed cabins and 5 twin shares.

AMAZING! Richard is able to make scientific talks hugely entertaining . I learnt so much, and every dive after the talks I found myself on the hunt for the new critters I had just learnt all about. Brilliant!
