Discovering a Hidden Jewel: The Sodwana Pygmy Pipehorse

Meet Africa’s Newest Underwater Marvel

September 2024 — Sodwana Bay, South Africa — A tiny new fish species has made a big splash in the world of marine biology. Introducing the Sodwana Pygmy Pipehorse (Cylix nkosi), a captivating creature recently discovered in the vibrant waters of Sodwana Bay. This marks the first time a pygmy pipehorse has been found in African waters, adding a dazzling new gem to the continent’s marine biodiversity.

Although the Sodwana Pygmy Pipehorse belongs to the same family as seahorses, pipefishes, and seadragons, this species’ closest relative was only discovered in New Zealand in 2021. In a fascinating twist, this “miniature seahorse with a twist” lives in a world of pregnant fathers, grasping tails, and eyes more like a chameleon’s than a fish’s. Straddling the evolutionary boundaries between seahorses and pipefishes, these unique fish have remained shrouded in mystery—until now.

The discovery came 22 meters (70 feet) beneath the waves in Sodwana Bay, where marine biologists Drs. Louw Claassens and Richard Smith spotted the tiny fish clinging to a sponge near one of the area’s ancient plateau-like reefs. With the help of local diver Christo van Jaarsveld from SeaXplore, they collected this elusive new species for formal identification by taxonomist Graham Short. The findings were recently published in the scientific journal Ichthyology and Herpetology.

At less than 5 cm (2 inches) in length, finding this critter in the bustling coral reef is like looking for a needle in a haystack. It’s no wonder they have evaded detection for so long. However, the team’s discovery has sparked renewed interest in exploring the hidden corners of our oceans. Since the initial find, additional specimens have been uncovered in historical museum collections.

Not only is this fish the first of its kind to be discovered in the Indian Ocean, but its closest relatives also live more than 12,000 km away in New Zealand. The new species, which can range in colour from maroon and scarlet red to mustard yellow and off-white, is already captivating scientists and ocean enthusiasts alike.

The Sodwana Pygmy Pipehorse is just the latest in a series of remarkable discoveries from this area. The same research team also described the South African Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus nalu) in 2020, demonstrating that these waters are teeming with tiny, overlooked marine life.

Named Cylix nkosi, which means “chief” in the local Nguni and Zulu languages, the new species honours the crown-like bony structure on the fish’s head. Its discovery in shallow coastal waters serves as a reminder of how much we still have to learn about marine life around Africa—and beyond.

Despite the lack of research funding, discoveries like the Sodwana Pygmy Pipehorse show there are still many mysteries to unravel in the Western Indian Ocean. Seahorses and their relatives are particularly vulnerable to human impacts and overfishing. Without understanding their conservation status and enacting suitable measures, many species may vanish before we even know they exist.
