FiNS issue 7.3 - Bargibant's & Denise's Pygmy Seahorses

My column 'Really Richard?' continues, this time helping distinguish between two species very dear to me - Denise's and Bargibant's pygmy seahorses!  If I happen to be on a trip with you there will be no excuse for not knowing the difference!

Sport Diving issue 127 - Seahorses

Just an update on my new article on the biology of seahorses and pipefish titled 'A Case Study in Martital Bliss' which is currently on the shelves throughout Asia and soon in Australia in Sport Diving Magazine.  This fascinating group have really amazing reproductive behaviours so have a read!

FiNS Issue 7.2 - Lembeh Top 10 Must-See List

FiNS issue 7.2 was a busy one for me, with a 'Really Richard?' about how to distinguish between mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus) and picturesque dragonets (Synchiropus picturatus), an article on diving in Lembeh Strait and the Top 10 critters to see there, as well as the front cover shot of a yawning Rhinopias!

FiNS Issue 7.2 - Mandarinfish & Picturesque Dragonet

FiNS issue 7.2 was a busy one for me, with a 'Really Richard?' about how to distinguish between mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus) and picturesque dragonets (Synchiropus picturatus), an article on diving in Lembeh Strait and the Top 10 critters to see there, as well as the front cover shot of a yawning Rhinopias!

Sport Diving Issue 126 - Cephalopods

The new issue of Scuba Diving magazine, which is available throughout Australasia, contains a full length article about cephalopods (squid & octopus) entitled 'Stunning Cephalopods'.

FiNS Issue 7.1 - Scorpionfish & Stonefish

I have a column in FiNS diving magazine starting this issue (Jan/Feb 7.1).  It is called 'Really Richard?' and helps you to identify commonly mistaken reef species.  This month explains how to distinguish stone and scorpionfishes.

Identifying Common Rhinopias Species

One of my pet peeves is the misidentification of members of the scoprionfish genus Rhinopias (family Scorpaenidae). There are 3 members of this genus that are commonly seen by divers in South East Asia - Rhinopias aphanes, Rhinopias eschmeyeri and Rhinopias frondosa.

Nudibranch Article in new issue of Asian Diver!

I have an article about nudibranchs in the current issue of Asian Diver Magazine, which is on news stands throughout Asian now, and will be hitting Australia in the next couple of weeks. Nudibranchs are an amazing group of marine molluscs, ok that's a fancy way of saying slugs. They have much more to offer than the ordinary garden variety. Nudibranch hunting can make the most average of dives an interesting challenge!

Sport Diving Issue 138 - Pygmy Species Explosion

Pygmy Species Explosion The new issue of Sport Diving has just been published and contains my article Pygmy Species Explosion.

It explains some of the work that is part of my PhD, focusing on the ecology of pygmy seahorses, as well as quick run down of the species that have recently been described such as Hippocampus pontohi, Hippocampus waleananus, Hippocampus severnsi and Hippocampus satomiae.

New Species of Velvet Fish

Whilst on a night dive aboard the Paradise Dancer in the Raja Ampat region of Indonesia recently I came across this unusual velvetfish. I consulted Dr Gerry Allen, the world renowned fish expert, who confirmed that he had never seen a fish like it and that it may well be a new species.  He is going to keep his eyes peeled for a specimen to do a formal description, as am I.
